Infant Health and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) provides assistance for the working poor. In the current economic status of our nation, many are looking to reduce or eliminate this tax credit. But doing so would be a grave mistake.
Recent research shows that the EITC plays a role in infant health, even birth weight. How?
Our results suggest that part of the mechanism for this improvement in birth outcomes is the result of more prenatal care and less negative health behaviors (smoking).
While no one particularly enjoys paying taxes, and most want credits and deductions that would benefit them, we need to consider which play a significant role in promoting well-being, especially for those who need it most.
