What Does It Look Like to Serve in Allendale?
|Emily (of Emily Clarke Studio) led a paint day|
We are so thankful for how Grace Church has made a path before us for ministry in Allendale. And we are so thankful that we can be a part of this. But maybe you want to serve here, too? If you do (whether it’s for a few hours or a few days, or more), we’d love to help.
Our primary focus is the after school program that we lead in. But if you want to serve in another area of ministry for the sake of Allendale, check out the Culturally Engaged website, and contact Jeff Randolph (or send me an email, and I’ll pass it on to him).
Why Serve in the After School Program?
We have already had a handful of folks from Grace Church serve. Why did they come down? What did they enjoy? Here’s what some have said:
- To see what Allendale is like.
- They had already been down, and felt a draw to come back.
- Satisfying to be able to serve these kids, despite how hectic and tiring it was.
- Getting to know the kids in this community on a personal level.
What Can Be Done?
Some poeple came for a few hours (including one guy who had a business trip nearby, and came by to play football after work), and some stayed for a couple of days. Some came prepared to do some programming (outdoor group games, making hot air balloons, arts & crafts, etc), and some just joined in with our pre-planned activities. We can adjust and plan for how much you’d like to do!
I have had some conversations with others about what can be done this summer, including:
- students from Grace Church helping with our day camp
- dance and/or art camp
- sports camp
And After You Serve . . .
When you come down, not only will you bless this next generation, but you will learn and be blessed as well.Yes, most of the children have serious behavior issues, and you will be exhausted. You have to remember that discipleship is not an event, but a process. It’s not about a dramatic removing of evil and sin, but about a consistent pouring in of good, clear water. What a privilege to be a part of it! By just being here, you will make Allendale a better place.
So, what about you? Do you have time, experiences, or skills that you could share with these children? Whatever you have, these kids need. They are desperate for attention and love, and who can better give these than those who are filled with the Spirit of God?
